Designed to Empower Communication
Ideal for Spelling to Communicate (S2C[1]) and More
Originally built with S2C in mind, the Speller Keyboard helps non-speaking people—and anyone with ocular/motor impairments—bridge the gap between intention and expression. This device offers a seamless transition from traditional letterboards or paper-based prompts to a fully functional electronic keyboard.
Our Story
One of our founder’s college professors has a son with non-speaking autism who communicates using S2C. He struggled to transition to standard QWERTY keyboards—even large-format models—because the keys were still too small and the layout required a completely different motor plan.
Using our first prototype Speller Keyboard, he was able to move directly from his familiar plastic-sheet letterboard to typing electronically without relearning a brand-new layout. Now, what he spells automatically appears on a tablet or computer—no more manual transcription!
It’s a big step toward autonomy and clearer communication for him, and we’re excited to offer the same possibilities to others.
Key Features & Benefits
36 Large, High-Contrast Keys
Generous key size (~1.3" x 1.2") and bold lettering make typing more accessible for users with ocular/motor challenges or dyspraxia.
Highly Customizable & Adaptable
The Speller Keyboard supports numbers with a Number Lock key. Just like Caps Lock switches letters to uppercase, Number Lock switches some letters into numbers. You can also assign other special characters, backlighting control, Bluetooth pairing, and just about any function you can think of, thanks to the powerful open-source ZMK firmware onboard.
Flexible Connection Options
Use Bluetooth for wireless freedom or USB-C for a wired connection. The wireless antenna switches off when plugged in via USB, minimizing EMF exposure or overstimulation.
Long Battery Life & Custom Backlighting
Enjoy weeks of operation on a single charge (with backlighting off). Optional subtle illumination behind each key is built in, and a future software update will allow for fully programmable full-color lighting effects, which can help provide additional visual feedback.
Designed for Comfort & Independence
An ergonomic hand strap and kickstand provide stability—use it on a desk, hold it on your lap, or work with a communication partner. It’s less visually stimulating than a bright tablet screen, reducing distractions.
Small-Batch, USA-Based Manufacturing
We’re producing this batch via 3D printing and hand-assembly in the USA to keep quality high and meet specialized needs. Because of this approach, we rely on batch production—order by February 28th, 2025 to ensure yours is included.
Custom Colors & Key Sets Possible
Personalize your Speller Keyboard with custom color options or language-specific keys to suit your exact requirements and style preferences. Let us know your unique needs and we'll do our best to deliver a solution that fits like a glove!
